I have always loved the beauty and peace found in nature.  As a youth, I spent countless hours hiking in the forests of the northeast, and later among the hills, streams, cliffs, and scrubland of central Texas.  Along the way my father, who was also an artist, greatly nurtured my love of nature and its beauty.  He taught me to take the time to notice the beauty in our world, whether overt or subtle.

Alas, it is hard to make a living wandering in the wilderness.  For many years I followed my other passion: science and teaching.  I worked in industry, taught college chemistry, and later became a vice president and college provost.  Yet throughout my professional life I always relished my time in nature, making whatever time I could to immerse myself in the beauty of our natural world.  Throughout those years my camera was an important companion, capturing the beauty we encountered.

Several years ago I realized that it was time to focus on my photography passion and share the beauty I encountered in nature.  Soon after I became a full-time nature photographer.  Now, when I’m out in nature and something grabs my attention - the lighting, colors, form, or texture - I take note.  I look carefully, and work to truly see what is before me and to identify what is causing my emotional response. I ask myself whether the scene could have more impact at another time: perhaps morning, evening, different weather, or even a different time of year.  Then as I finally capture and then process the image, my goal is always to bring you, the viewer, into that moment so that you can share with me the beauty and awe of that moment.

Thanks for joining me on this journey!
